Motherhood brings with it sweet new joys and tough new challenges. It is a time when a sense of possibility arises, and with it an opportunity to follow a dream or creative passion that may have been on the backburner for years. Pursuing an alternative career can allow moms greater flexibility, more time at home with their children, as well as the creative satisfaction of entrepreneurship. Written by Meg Mateo and Cat Seto, two successful businesswomen and mothers who draw from their own life experiences, Mom Inc. is the definitive must-read for aspiring mom-preneurs. This practical guide to running a successful business from home will be your first and most important resource in turning your ideas into reality.

Mom Inc. aims to help you define the right niche for your skills and teach you how to get your business up and running. The book is divided into eight chapters: the entrepreneurial mom, starting a blog, offering a service, creating a product, opening an online retail shop, business basics, getting the word out, and surviving the juggle. It is full of great advice on branding, creating a business plan, and marketing. There are inspiring case study examples, like fashion designer Cynthia Rowley and Style Me Pretty blogger Abby Larson. Unlike any other book in its genre, Mom Inc. tackles not only the nitty-gritty topics of starting a business, but also essential tips on the organization and planning it takes to balance work life with motherhood.

We adore this insightful, honest book about what it takes to build a business as a mother and think that you will too. Whatever your dream may be, in order to strike out on your own path and join the mom-preneur movement, you are going to need a plan, determination, a strong belief in yourself…and this inspiring guide

Don't miss out on the rest of other wonderful books too!

It always seems like once summer starts to quietly slip away, there comes a last burst of sunshine and warm rays. We love how some of our fellow Ruchettes are classically color-blocking with the cutest of A-line skirts and delicate blouses. Don't store your summer shades and leg baring skirts just yet, ladies! Let's finish our warm, sunny days in the most stylish of ways!

We love how Sydney of A Resplendent Resurgence pairs her cotton candy color blouse with our Meet Me At The Bayou Striped Skirt In Jade for an afternoon of color blocking. Sydney radiantly shows us not to hesitate when it comes to boldly pairing our colors. Even if it is simply for an afternoon stroll.

Jea of Dainty Jea wears our Never Alone Striped Sweater In Mustard with a beautiful ruby jeweled tone statement necklace and ankle booties. This above the knee skirt and sweater combo is the perfect transition into the Fall season.

Your may never believe that Caitlin of Voguish At Best is actually wearing a romper underneath her buttoned jean shorts. We love how Caitlin pairs our soft blue Moon River Bib Necklace with her candy colored pink cardigan. It's the perfect twist of sophistication. Our previous Ruchette of the Month, Elizabeth of Ellie Joy, looks beautiful in our Fall For You Polka Dot Top In White and heels. With a perfect sleek bun and adorable black heels, this outfit is the dream for a walk around town. It's always a little sad to see summer go, but when one door closes, another door opens to many new and exciting trends. Let's make our summertime exit as we should with our favorite bold colors and classic prints.

There is something about fall that always makes us excited to dress with a little more polish and refinement than any other season. Whether it’s a work meeting, a brunch date, or a social soiree, some occasions simply call for sophisticated attire. On those days, when you’re standing in front of your closet tossing clothes here and there, reach for polished wardrobe staples that way you won’t have to try on fifteen outfits before you’re ready!

The essence of polished style is about looking put together in structured, feminine pieces like peplum, pencil skirts, cropped pants, and blazers. For a polished ensemble, make a statement with a bold print, flirt in sweet florals, or opt for ladylike detailing like ruffles and lace. Lastly, don’t forget polished accessories to add the finishing touch: a statement necklace will beautifully tie your look together, and the right bag is a must for carrying all your daily essentials.

Shop our collection of properly polished style essentials for effortless sophistication!

If you follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, then you know that in August our buying and products team hopped aboard a plane to Las Vegas, along with our social media gal to document the trip, for three days of Magic! Magic is one of the largest West Coast fashion tradeshows held twice a year in February and August, showcasing the trends, colors, styles, and clothes for two seasons ahead. During the three days of Magic we select a significant portion of the items that we offer in our shop for the seasons ahead, and we love using this opportunity to get your opinions and show you a bit of the behind the scenes fun that creates our online boutique.

Our stylist and buyers were prepared for the Magic tradeshow with their fashion predictions, and we had quite a bit of feedback from our Ruchettes on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Thank you so much to all our customers for coming along with us and sending in your votes. Your feedback was invaluable! This year we had a wonderful time browsing the cute booth set-ups and shopping for pretty pieces at Dear Creatures, Seychelles, Pink Martini, Amour Vert, Sugarhill, Knitted Dove, BB Dakota, Tulle, Darling UK, and MM Couture, among many others. We even picked up a few new items for this fall and winter that we can’t wait to share with you!

Since Magic is about trend forecasting and style inspiration, we asked some of our favorite brands these questions so we could share their answers with you:
    1. What trends are you looking forward to for spring and summer 2014?
    2. Where do you (personally) get your fashion inspiration from?

    Amour Vert:
    1. Stripes and jumpsuits.
    2. From our designer, Linda (from Paris).
--Jackie, Co-founder and Director of Sales

Fun fact: Amour Vert plants a tree for every one of their Tee items sold, and have planted trees in California, Montana, and Florida so far. Their goal is to plant 100,000 trees by 2015, and we love their eco-mission!

    Sugarhill:
    1. Sweatshirts and bomber jackets.
    2. Street style generally.
    --Aleks, Creative Director

    Dear Creatures:
    1. Vibrant colors and unique patterns (every season). Also light and flirty fabric!
    2. Film and music, old movies and 60’s music.
    --Diana, Account Supervisor

    Pink Martini:
    1. Bold-funky prints and more dresses!
    2. Different countries – especially Japan!
    --Lesley, Senior Sales Rep

While Magic was a busy three days running around the tradeshow, connecting with brands, and shopping up a storm, we don’t believe in all work and no play. We stayed at the Cosmo, indulged in nice dinners out together, and enjoyed the fun of being in Las Vegas. Until next time Magic!

Something borrowed, something new, something old and something... custom made! When we found these custom designs from Laura of Paper Mothball Vintage, we couldn't help but fall beside ourselves in excitement. Her designs are so unique and vintage and beautiful that there really is no other design quite like it out there. After finding inspiration from her husband, Laura has found her perfect nitch in the world of artistic, vintage custom made wedding dresses. Hear more about how she plans each design, the imagination that comes to life and her passion behind it all.

I am a vintage fashion designer living in Brooklyn, NY. I began sewing as a hobby, and am mostly self taught, using vintage sewing patterns from the 1940s. I designed and draped my wedding dress. It took me about 2 weeks to make. The overall design was inspired by the 1930s which is my favorite time period, because I think it was the most glamorous.

The waist is hand quilted and beaded from a vintage 1920s dress that was completely falling apart. I was really glad to save some of that, and give it a new life. The back buttons up with vintage 1950s set crystal buttons.

I made a bow tie out of the remnant fabric from my dress for my husband. He complimented the bow tie with vintage cream suspenders.

My husband is from Japan, and witnessing his journey to follow his dream inspired me to follow mine. Designing for me is an escape into my own world where I am free to express myself. I love being there, although it always has its stressful moments. I like working through the problems that always arise with a garment, its more rewarding.

Tiffany Mitchell is a creative at heart whose artistic talents span everything from soap-making to culinary inventiveness to illustration! In addition to co-founding the wonderful lifestyle blog offbeat + inspired and serving as creative editor for the magazine CAKE&WHISKEY Magazine, Tiffany creates beautiful fashion prints. We adore her artistic sketches for the way they add a whimsical touch to any gallery wall and spruce up a workspace. You can find her prints available online in her shop!

Do you see anything familiar in the print below? It’s a Ruchette outfit! Tiffany drew her inspiration for this lovely sketch from the vintage-inspired clothing in our shop. Read on for an interview with Tiffany about her love of art, creative inspiration, and her Ruche wishlist!

For this print Tiffany put together a darling outfit, pairing our Morning Blossom Floral Top with our Bristol Printed Circle Skirt. We adore the sweetly retro combination of the black and white geometric design with the deep mustard yellow hue!

When did you discover your love for art?
I've loved art for as long as I can remember. I used to play with paper dolls when I was very small and as soon as I discovered pen and paper, I started sketching little models and dressing them up. I was notorious for not paying attention during class due to my doodling habit. Art class was my favorite -- the only time I wasn't getting in trouble!

What does your creative space look like? Or do you draw wherever you feel inspired?
My personal creative space is my breakfast room. It's got a little thrifted barn wood table topped with all my favorite pretty dishes and just enough space for my laptop and sketchbook. I love a good cafe setting for creating too. I'll often head to a Starbucks or a local coffee shop and set up camp for hours. I find unique inspiration in spaces where people are coming and going, creating, enjoying coffee, chatting. I soak it right up!

What mediums did you use for the drawing?
I start with pencil, then I use Micron pens or Copic Multiliners, then I color with either watercolor paints or Copic Sketch markers. Finally, depending on the piece, I'll add finishing touches with anything from glitter to metallic paint pens. Always trying something new!

    What's on your Ruche wishlist?
My Ruche wish list is a long one! Right now though, I'd have to say that for clothing/shoes, my list would be the Bristol Printed Circle Skirt, theHudson Color Block Bag, the Leila Oxford Flats in Mustard, the Floral Bliss Hooded Coat, and for home, the Stonybrook Large Mixing Bowl in Yellow, the Hanging Garden Recipe Cards, the South Haven Dishtowel Set, the Stirling Bay Small Pitcher, and a set of the Ivy Lane Mini Serving Bowls in Pink. Phew! And that's not even a fraction of the REAL list.

    --Tiffany Mitchell

And be sure to take a peek at Tiffany’s other cute illustrations that we previously featured on our blog, inspired by our past summer style feature, the Sunshine List: Art Studio: The Sunshine List Illustrations.

As we begin our yearly march back to school and the organized routine that comes with Fall, we have to bid farewell to our effortlessly fun summer days. As Labor Day quickly approaches, send Summer the proper Au Revoir and Bon Voyage goodbyes with the Pink Lemonade Icebox Cake that Amy of Club Narwhal kindly shares. This yummy no-bake cake recipe is so tasty and so easy. The hardest part of this recipe is having to wait until you can get your hands on this delicious summer cake.

    Ingredients:
    2 cups heavy whipping cream
    12 ounces cream cheese
    1/2 cup sugar
    Zest of one lemon
    Juice of half a lemon
    2-3 drops red food coloring
1 1/2 packages of lemon cookie thins (I used Trader Joe’s Meyer Lemon Cookie Thins)
2 cups whipped topping, tinted pink

    Directions:
    1. In a very cold metal bowl, whip cream, cream cheese, sugar, lemon zest, and lemon juice together until stiff peaks form, about 5-6 minutes. Add food coloring until the whipped cream resembles cotton candy.

    2. Layer cookies on the bottom of a nine-inch springform pan, using bits of cookie to fill in any gaps. Top the cookie layer with a third of the whipped cream mix. Alternate cookie and whipped topping ending on a cookie layer. Tint your whipped topping with a drop or two of red food coloring until it is nice and pink. Spread on top of the final cookie layer.

    3. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 6-8 hours. Remove from fridge and use a knife to go around the edges of the pan, loosening the cake. Carefully release cake from the pan and top with a festive garland. Serves 8.

*Notes: Lemon curd will make this cake sing. If you can’t find lemon cookie thins, use vanilla wafers or another mild crunchy cookie. You can also substitute a tub of whipped topping for the heavy cream, making this dessert so easy you will weep.

    Happy reading and baking friends!

This sassy Pink Lemonade Icebox Cake will be the star of your next book club or lady luncheon. With store-bought lemon wafer cookies and luscious cream cheese whipped cream, this cake is a snap to prepare! This cake goes perfectly with your most darling dress and favorite pumps. Check out the video to see how easily this cake comes together.
