Ruchettes, you might recognize Emily Reeves as the enchanting songstress behind the song "Restless" in our Once Upon a Time winter lookbook video! Not only do we adore Emily for her talent as a musician, we are also inspired by her creativity and love for all things positive. Being a child of the music industry, Emily was able to give us some fun insight on life as a singer/songwriter and she also shared with us what inspires her on a daily basis. We were thrilled to feature Emily in our lookbook video and we were even more excited to sit down with her and pick her brain on all things music, fashion and day-to-day life. Here is what Emily had to say!
In three words, how would you describe your style of music?
Hmmm...I would have to say raw, laid-back, and slightly pop-ish.
Having parents in the entertainment industry, did you know at a young age that you wanted to pursue music? What do you love most about it?
Having both parents in the entertainment industry definitely inspired me at a young age. I started singing since I can remember, and I wrote my first song at age 11. My dad would come in my room and play guitar and sing me to sleep, so that alone got me singing and songwriting, but what really got me as well was the way that being in the entertainment industry could reach/affect people. My main purpose through music is to relate to people through what I’ve gone through, to hopefully make them feel something, and to encourage them that we’re all in this together.
What’s a typical day like for you? Are you a full-time musician?
Haha, well my typical day tends to vary quite a bit. Along with working on music, I work a couple different jobs. I work at a really sweet interior design store in Franklin, TN, and I’m also really involved at the gym, Team Tae Bo Fitness. So between working those jobs and music, it’s pretty packed full. But my bosses are really flexible with me, so when I do have a day off, I normally wake up around 7:30 am, have some quiet time, hit up Starbucks, and head to a writing session and run through songs for any upcoming shows.
Your blog is an eclectic collection of DIYs, music, food and art. It makes us wonder, what can we find you doing in your free time?
Yes! I was actually just working on my website today, and it made me laugh, because it really is all over the place! When I do have free time, I love to be active and doing something productive. Don’t get me wrong, there are days that include nothing but PJ’s, movies, and snacks, but I love to create, whether it be food, outfits, wall art, decorations...pretty much anything. Like today, I spent the afternoon making pumpkin bread and planning out Thanksgiving decorations. I’m kind of a grandma at heart ;)
We have to ask about your song “Restless” (which was featured in our winter lookbook video!). It’s truly beautiful! What’s the inspiration behind it?
Goodness, thank you so incredibly much, it truly means the world to hear you say that! What inspired the song “Restless” was really just an ongoing feeling that had been occurring in the lives of both me and my friend, Matt Johnson, who wrote it with me. We got together one day, and we both shared how the future was so unknown, and how we live with the hope that something greater is ahead, but there’s so many moments of feeling restless, in the sense of what if the ‘something greater’ gets here and it’s not as fulfilling as I think it’s going to be, such as a great career or falling in love. Yet, in the end, we still keep chasing the feeling down, because it’s worth it.
When it comes to fashion, does your wardrobe play a role in your career at all? If so, in what ways? Is there anything on Ruche you’d wear for a performance or photo shoot? How about on a date?
Honestly, aside from music, I am passionate about fashion. I get so much satisfaction from something as small as planning my outfit for the next day! Going into the music business, I’ve realized that you always must possess your sense of self, as far as your identity, who you are. I believe that what you wear always makes a statement, whether you mean for it to or not, so I work hard at trying to maintain a unique style, but not so far out that it’s strange! There is sooo much on Ruche that I absolutely love, haha! Concerning performing and video shoots, I love to dress up, but stay comfortable at the same time...the ‘Your Name Is Light’ sequined dress, the ‘Bronze Goddess’ sequined skirt, and the ‘A Little Grace’ colorblocked dress most definitely caught my eye as pieces that I would wear to perform and film. Dates are a whole different story though! Haha, I love to dress up in a sense, but as of recent, the dates that I’ve been going on, which are totally my speed, are really adventurous, so I keep it a little more casual, like the ‘Stained Glass Floral Tunic’, the ‘Benton City Button Up’ Blouse, and the ‘Hotel Lucia Wrap Blouse’ in stone. They are all really sweet and can be made romantic, while remaining adventurous. ;)
Now, some quick questions to find out a little bit more about you!
Indoors or outdoors? Outdoors, most definitely. :)
Favorite musician? I am absolutely in love with Train. They have inspired me for years and still do. :)
Sundresses or big, cozy sweaters? Big, cozy sweaters...me in a nutshell. haha :)
Sweet treats or salty snacks? I have the world’s biggest sweet tooth ... my weaknesses include Ben & Jerry’s Half Baked ice cream and Chex Mix Muddy Buddies...gahhhh.
