When we’re putting together a lookbook, our concept goes beyond beautiful clothing and accessories on a lovely model. Because it’s the setting and the little details that help create the world of the lookbook and tell the story. And it’s especially the vintage touches that add old-world grace and charm. So when it comes to sourcing all things vintage for our lookbooks, there is just one place we go - Found Vintage Rentals!
Jeni Maus, the owner of Found Vintage Rentals, has built a hugely successful business by spending countless hours hand-picking each vintage piece. Everything she has thoughtfully curated in her collection has a sense of history and a one-of-a-kind style. Found Vintage Rentals has become the ultimate go-to for vintage finds for us at Ruche, and for other businesses, event planners, brides, and photographers in Southern California. We were so thrilled to sit down with Jeni for our Breakfast at Ruche Series! Watch our interview with her and then read on for even more about this vintage maven.
When did you discover your passion for antiques? Have you always been a collector?
I started buying antiques when my husband and I were first engaged, and I was starting to decorate our house. I was always drawn to the character and comfort in old pieces and I loved how adding them to the decor in house provided a cozy and inviting atmosphere.
You’ve taken a hobby and turned it into a thriving business. (So amazing!) What advice can you give girls aspiring to do the same?
Find your style. I think to be successful at anything in life, you have to believe in it and love it whole heartedly. It is easy to get distracted by outside influences, but as long as you love what you are doing, and buy things that define your style, then at least you can feel confident in the pieces that define your business.
We’re dying to know – what does your home look like? Is it similar to the pieces we see at Found? How often do you come across pieces that you love so much, they end up in your home?
My house is very much like my inventory. I have a very muted color palette in my home, consisting of white, grays, black, leather, and indigo. I used to trade things out all the time, but now I have learned to buy specifically for my home, and separately for my inventory. There are very similar pieces in both places though!
Your warehouse is gigantic! How do you know where everything is?
We have organized the warehouse in a way that makes it easy for my crew to load, and unload and we have a very strict policy that everything goes back to the same place. We keep like items together so that it is easier for clients to see all of the options when they come in for meetings, and also for our crew to find the pieces they are looking for when fulfilling orders. My warehouse manager spends Monday mornings making sure everything is put back in it's proper place and organized so that everything is easy to see. We are always thinking of resourceful ways to maximize the vast space in the warehouse, while keeping it somewhat "styled" and presentable for clients to view.
Behind every great company is an even greater team. Tell us about the Found crew in 3 words.
Hardworking. Loyal. Dedicated.
What’s a typical day like for the Found team?
Sales meetings, organizing and preparing for upcoming events, adding and maintaining the inventory, photo shoots, organizing the warehouse, delivering to clients….
And now for a round of quick fire questions to pick your brain further!
- Silver or gold? A year ago I would have said Silver, but now definitely gold.
- A good book or a good movie? A good movie
- Sangria or an old fashioned? Sangria
- Fall or spring? Fall
- Booties or heels? Booties
Last, but not least, for anyone interested in using Found Rentals, how should they get in contact with you? Should they have a vision in mind first?
Staring with a phone call to the office is our preference (714.888.5811), or an initial email (firstname.lastname@example.org). Although it is great if they have a vision of what they are after, it is definitely not mandatory. We like to talk about their style, and what kinds of things they might be drawn to, and we love to help show them what pieces might fulfill their vision.
