  • My mom has a great sense of humor, so she "amended" my grandmother's (her mom's) advice, "You can't eat looks on a plate" to quip, "but it sure helps when the person eating opposite you is a feast for the eyes."

    Her more serious advice was simply this: "Be strong; the only person you can rely on is yourself."
