Layered frocks, embellished sweaters, and wintery hues are the highlights in our Style File this week! Winter is in full swing; neighborhoods have begun to shine with twinkly lights strung from every roof, coats and chunky knits have become a permanent staple, and we're spending more time in our cozy local coffee shop lingering over many a cup of hot chocolate than we care to admit! Since balancing style with warmth is always a tricky fashion proposition, we're excited to share how a few of our favorite Ruchettes express their lovely cold weather style.

Elizabeth of Delightfully Tacky wears velvet, one of our favorite fabrics for the winter season, flawlessly. The weight of the fabric provides warmth and is perfect for layering, while the luxe sheen adds that essential holiday touch for any festive soiree outfit! We love how Elizabeth styled our velvet skirt with sophisticated, feminine touches in her lace jacket, color-blocked bag, and heart-printed blouse.

Allie looks lovely in this cozy layered ensemble! The author of Little Squires combines shades of red and neutrals to create an outfit that we would wear for any wintry walk through the woods or weekend coffee date. Her patterned dress is the ideal winter piece for dressing up or down depending on the occasion.

We are entranced with this outfit! Caitlin of Voguish at Best dons our embellished sweater complete with hints of gorgeous pearl accents. Along with casual boyfriend jeans and ankle strap pointed shoes, Caitlin completes her outfit with our vintage-inspired purse, for a look that balances sweet elegance with menswear inspiration!

Looking just as stunning as the twilight backdrop of the city skyline, Melina of The Caffeinated Closet looks ready to spend an evening out on the town in the chilly winter air! Along with her tights and booties, Melina's denim jacket and chunky knit scarf are the foremost accessories to pair with her light and flowing dress for cozy layering.

Kelly of Wears Kelly embraces retro style in this fair isle frock! Her Parisian chic beret and long sleeved blouse layered under this printed dress create a look that is both stylish and perfect for varying temperatures. She adds a pop of color to this black and white palette with her bold red tights!

A wrap dress, statement necklace, and heels are all of the essentials when it comes to creating an outfit perfect for any seasonal soiree! Signe of Signeroo looks striking in this printed frock with a flattering silhouette and a lovely shade of red on her lips!

As we move farther into the winter season, our Ruchettes continue to dazzle with their wardrobes. December will bring us new ways to layer our favorite summery pieces and challenge us to find the outfits for holiday dinners with our families and White Elephant parties with friends. We love how the frost in the air challenges us to be more creative in our outfits, and we continue to find inspiration everywhere!

Borrowing from the boys is something stylish women have been doing for years, and it’s a trend that isn’t going anywhere because there is something inherently classic about the balance between elegance and masculinity, between girly details and tailored menswear looks.  Putting together an ensemble with the perfect interplay of feminine sophistication and menswear style is an art, but one that any girl can (and should!) master. Whether you edge towards classic, girly, polished, rustic, or retro, you can adapt the tomboy aesthetic to your style. It takes a hint of rebelliousness and playfulness to mix something you might find in your boyfriend’s closet with sophisticated, feminine pieces, so incorporating menswear inspired looks into your wardrobe speaks volumes to your style confidence. But if you’ve ever traipsed around the house in a man’s button up or given your skinnies a break and slipped into your boyfriend’s jeans, then you know exactly how fun it can be to borrow from the boys!

Here’s how some style bloggers are wearing the trend! First up is Jessica Quirk of What I Wore who feminizes her utility coat by mixing and matching black and white prints. Jessica's boyish plaid button up and fitted blazer are complimented by a statement necklace and flats.Stephanie Liu of Honey & Silk wears our favorite fall hue, mustard yellow, along with a boyish chambray top and pretty accessories like sandals and bracelets. Sarah Vickers of Classy Girls Wear Pearls maintains classic femininity her menswear inspired blazer with a sparkly jewelry and ruffled dress.

Here are our 5 tips for menswear-inspired style:
    1. Instead of wearing menswear-inspired attire from head to toe, be sure to mix in girly pieces. One or two pieces in an ensemble might be more tomboyish, like a tweed blazer and Oxfords, and then you would pair them with heels, a ladylike blouse, and skinny jeans.

    2. A printed blazer, in houndstooth or tweed, looks like it belongs on a preppy Oxford professor. But you can toss it over a feminine dress or full skirt for a cute menswear look! We suggest finding a blazer that nips in at the waist for figure-flattering definition.

    3. Having a green military jacket in your fall line-up is a must! Accessorize a military jacket with pumps, a structured bag, and girly details like a Peter Pan collar and sparkly statement earrings to balance out the tough masculine edge.

    4. Vests are a cute way to add some menswear layering to an outfit. Just be sure you’re pairing a vest with ladylike florals or peplum.

    5. And the most classic of menswear inspired looks? Boyfriend jeans and heels. It never fails!

How are you wearing menswear-inspired pieces? We’d love to hear your favorite pieces to borrow from the boys in the comments below! Lastly, be sure to browse our Girl Meets Boy feature for more inspiration, and shop the collection for the menswear inspired pieces that belong in every girl’s closet.

With each passing day, the skies grow deeper shades of grey and the sidewalks are covered with scattered leaves as we move towards the winter season. Our usual sweaters and cardigans begin to shift from lightweight fabrics to heavier knits and our casual sandals and flats start to be traded for lace up oxfords and ankle booties. Along with crafting perfect cups of cocoa, colder temperatures mean more opportunities for layering our favorite cold weather accessories like knit scarves and beanies. Here are a few stunning Ruchettes showing off their fall style essentials!

Melina of The Caffeinated Closet stuns in our lace beige cardigan! Her ensemble composed of all neutral pieces keeps this fall look both effortless and stylish. We adore her dainty earrings and necklace which compliment the feminine floral knit of her cardigan perfectly!

Kelly of Wears Kelly looks ready for a fall soiree in our Modern Darling Printed Dress and cut out pumps. The fit and flare silhouette and geometric print give this charming dress a distinctly mod style that can add vintage flair to any wardrobe. We love that Kelly kept her accessories neutral and added a pop of color with her lipstick!

Cassidy of Things Like Skeleton Keys shows off her maternity style in this stunning high-low dress. The artistic rendering of leaves along with the jewel-toned hues of the skirt masterfully evoke the spirit of the harvest season. The varying red hues Cassidy's red lips, nails, and hair add to her sophisticated fall style.

Tieka of Selective Potential displays her charming rustic style in our On the Trail top. She effortlessly mixes two of our favorite fall patters, polka dot and plaid, and adds an unexpected pop of color in her wedge shoes. The barn provides the perfect fall background to this simply stylish outfit!

Signe of Signeroo shows how easy it is to add autumnal style to any outfit by adding a knit or patterned scarf! Looking casual yet refined, our open grey cardigan adds to her cozy fall ensemble. Now, if only we could master Signe's braided hairstyle! The change in season is in full swing and we are so excited to display our favorite fall essentials. Whether you're spending a rainy afternoon inside or dusting off your creative writing skills with composing an ode (read ours here!), autumn is just as much about reinventing your style as it is about engaging in fun seasonal activities!

As the temperatures dip even cooler and tree branches become more bare, our celebration of Frocktober comes to a close. With each day came an adorable dress selection and we loved seeing how Ruchettes styled their favorite frocks!

Caitlin of Voguish at Best has fall layering down to a simple science! She styled this printed dress with the essential fall accessories: a scarf, tights, cardigan, and our adorable cut out booties. We love how the soft hues of her dress and boots pop against her neutral tights and cozy cardigan!

Lacy Rose of Lacy Rose XO looks like she stepped out of the mod 1960's in our Geometric Shift Dress. She beautifully channels 60's icon Twiggy and flaunts her fabulous fall style with a colorful turtleneck and opaque tights. And the scattered golden leaves provide the perfect autumnal backdrop for this stunning ensemble!

Kaity of Brownie Diaries stuns in our Across the Pond dress and Butter Toffee dress. The classic patterns and light hues of these frocks are perfect for any occasion year round, but Kaity pairs both darling dresses with boots to suit the transitioning weather between seasons.  Whether it's stripes or polka dots, a pretty patterned dress is perfect for an afternoon stroll or date!

And so the month of Frocktober comes to an end. We loved featuring only frocks in all of our customer Style File roundups for this month, and our Ruchettes looked positively pretty in every dress. We also celebrated the month dedicated to dresses with the Frocktails series on our blog (graciously hosted by Natalie of The SoHo blog), by pairing creative cocktails with our darling frocks. Be sure to take a peek at each stylish libation in order to inspire your next happy hour!

Anorak, army green utility jacket, cargo coat, military inspired outerwear, field jacket…so many different possible names to give to one of our favorite fall trends. As our favorite English bard wrote in Romeo and Juliet, “A rose by any name would smell as sweet” and we couldn’t agree more! There may be many names for the green cargo jacket, but one thing everyone can agree on is that it’s a must-have fall essential

Either of these two green military inspired jackets will keep you on trend and toasty warm: Nature Walk Anorak Coat by Tulle, Lynden Hooded Utility Jacket

Since our Lynden Hooded Utility Jacket is on our “Chilly Weather List”, we thought we would talk a little more about how to incorporate this versatile staple into your fall wardrobe. Especially since we were a little uncertain at first ourselves, wondering how this menswear-inspired coat would complement a ladylike, sophisticated, and classic style. But it turns out this coat will become best friends with everything in your closet, from dresses to tailored cropped pants, and before you know it you’ll be throwing it over everything! So here are 5 styling tips for transforming the green military-inspired coat into a functional and feminine fall essential:

    1. Balance the military-inspired feel with more girly details, like pleats, ruffles, statement necklaces, and sparkly embellishments.

    2. Pair this fall essential with classic prints like polka dots, stripes, and plaid for the perfect mix of tough edge with vintage-inspired refinement.

    3. A green cargo jacket is a go-to outerwear choice for shorter dresses and skirts. It can also tone down a going out/occasion dress to make it look cute for an everyday ensemble.

    4. Top off your casual weekend attire with this coat for a more put together look for running errands, grabbing coffee with a friend, or going on a walk to the park. It works well with skinny jeans, boyfriend jeans, or over a casual dress.

    5. Lastly, it’s important to consider your beauty look before you toss on a military jacket. To keep your look sophisticated, opt for soft make-up (although the pop of a bright lip shade is always pretty!) and a cute, simple hairstyle, like a loose braid, a top-knot, or loose waves.

And here’s how our favorite bloggers are wearing theirs:

Emily of Cupcakes and Cashmere always incorporates the trends into her personal style in ways that inspire us! Here she shows us just how versatile a military inspired jacket can be, wearing it with a classic outfit of white trousers and a chambray button-up and then pairing it with a chic, all black ensemble. In each picture though, you can see how her beauty look softens the menswear element of the coat, first with a bright lip color and a loose braid, and in the next, with neutral, soft make-up and loose waves.

This darling outfit from Blair of Atlantic Pacific is a cute example of how a military-inspired jacket can be the perfect offset to girly details. Her white feather skirt, animal print heels, and classic striped top get a bit of an edge when paired with a green anorak. And belting it is a nice touch that also adds a bit of tailored sophistication!

Kendi of Kendi Everyday can do no wrong in our books! We’re smitten with her style, and love how she makes this shorter dress an everyday style option by adding a green cargo jacket. This outfit shows just how effortlessly a going out dress can be made appropriate for lunch meetings and coffee dates with the right jacket.

If you're still not convinced that this military-inspired style is for you, take a peek at all our coats and jackets too!

The first signs of fall have finally arrived: cooler temperatures, changing hues of leaves, and (most importantly) pumpkin spice lattes. The days are beginning to shorten, and the search for the perfect Halloween pumpkin to carve is just around the corner. The autumnal season always comes with a few wardrobe challenges for bridging the gap between the warmer months of summer and the crisp weather of fall. If you aren’t quite ready to retire your favorite summer dresses, transition them easily for fall by layering them over some warm tights and adding a cute pair of fall boots.

Jessica of The Steele Maiden, has perfected playing with fall colors wearing our Desert Canvas Printed Dress with brown accessories. This dress is a timeless canvas for playing up seasonal looks all year round. Jessica channels rustic charm and we are simply smitten!

Andrea of Momma in Flip Flops, looks positively darling in our Take My Heart Chevron Dress and brown boots. The flirty silhouette and cinched waist of this pretty frock help balance out her rustic knee-high boots. The brilliant shades of grey and yellow are the perfect colors for transitioning to fall!

Ellen from Thrify and Chic Mom, pairs our bright patterned Trail Blazer Printed Dress with neutral tights and boots. The dress is the perfect pop of color against her darker accessories and is a flawless look for those still warm days early in the autumn season. Plus, how adorable are her matching teal earrings?

Each adorable outfit our Ruchettes shared with us exemplifies a unique perspective on fall style with a common thread; whether it’s rustic inspired or a more casual approach to fall fashion, pairing boots with the summer pieces you aren’t quite ready to say goodbye to is a way to simplify your transitioning fall style.

Every week we love sharing our style file posts full of style inspiration from our beautiful Ruchettes! It is always so fun to see how such fashionable gals incorporate the trends into their personal style. This week we can’t get enough of the rustic style inspiration that Tieka of Selective Potential has shared on her blog. There is simply something about the season that makes us fall even more in love with outfits big on rustic charm. These are the sort of rustic ensembles that we would wear to go apple picking and pumpkin patch exploring, so let’s all take some perfect for the prairie style cues from Tieka’s darling outfits!

The first thing we took note of is how an autumn color palette, from burnt orange to burnished red, earthy brown to rich mustard, is at the heart of Tieka’s rustic style. She effortlessly combines warm earth tones and neutrals, and puts a feminine stamp on rustic style with plaid and polka dots. Each of her outfits is perfectly layered and full of varied textures for visual interest. Plus, her burnt orange tights are the color of fall foliage and make us think of jumping in a pile of leaves!

Each of Tieka’s rustic outfits has an outfit idea worth stealing! For example, sprucing up a boldly hued dress with a wide brown belt is a great go-to idea for rustic style. Pairing jeans with a cream-beige casual top and adding a pop of fall color with accessories (like her cozy knit beanie!) is the essence of rustic charm. And while we are totally smitten with fall boots, Tieka pairs charming T-strap flats with rustic outfits for a chic vintage-inspired spin. We hope you take away some style inspiration for dressing with rustic charm!

We always adore the classic appeal of vintage-inspired clothing, but this season we are returning to the refined chic and feminine sophistication of the 1950’s and 1960’s in particular. Naturally this brings to mind one of our favorite shows, Mad Men, which captured our attention for both its incredible costume design and great storytelling. Our fall lookbook, One Fine Day, drew inspiration from this era of ladylike, sophisticated style.

One of our Ruche family bloggers, Elizabeth from Ellie Joy, was also recently inspired by the look and feel of Mad Men too. In one of her outfit posts titled "If I Were Don Draper’s Secretary” she paired our dusty mint collared top with a gorgeous striped skirt. Her Mad Men inspired ensemble is beautifully pulled together with vintage-inspired accessories, including open-toed pumps, retro cat-eye sunglasses, and dainty jewelry. Of course a red lip is also a retro must!

When we think of Mad Men style, we envision polished ensembles, pretty 60’s patterns, bright florals, and black and white geometric prints. Women of that era opted for structured, tailored pieces, ladylike embellishments, and feminine details. So take a style cue from Joan who celebrates her curves in sophisticated, 9-5 appropriate, and stylish attire. Revamp your fall wardrobe with 50’s and 60’s inspired dresses, like shift dresses, sleek sheaths, and fitted dresses with nipped in waists and voluminous skirts. Channel the perfectly put together Betty Draper with her pearls and perfectly coiffed hair, and never leave the house without a statement coat. And if you want to be prepared to dash from office meetings to after work cocktails, choose a polished dress like Peggy’s in a deep autumn hue.
